Technique and Uses
Those suffering from chronic muscle pain or myofascial pain syndrome may find relief by applying the myofascial release technique to trigger points found throughout their body. Trigger points form as small, sensitive nodules (knots) in the myofascial (muscle and connective) tissues. These “knots” may be sensitive or painful to touch. If left untreated they can cause pain to radiate to other parts of the body since your body tries to use other muscles to compensate and give the primary trigger area a rest. This is known as referred pain and may develop a secondary trigger point. Trigger point therapy is focused on releasing these knots through the use of gentle, sustained pressure to stretch and lengthen the tissues back to their natural elastic and pliable state.
Precautions and Side Effects
Myofascial trigger point release therapy is not inherently risky, however, it is recommended to speak with your doctor prior to treatment if you are suffering from certain medical conditions such as; osteoporosis, fragility, or recent bone injuries; certain blood disorders, recent or current thrombosis, taking blood thinners; skin inflammation or infection; open or unhealed wounds. You may experience some dizziness as an active trigger point is released. Once it is released, you may feel immediate relief and increased energy or experience some residual soreness and fatigue as the muscle returns to its normal tone. If you experience further pain as a result of treatment, please let me know.
